Tate's first book, The Lost Pilot (1967), was selected for the Yale Series of Younger Poets and his Selected Poems (1991) won the Pulitzer Prize. Tate teaches at the University of Massachusetts as Amherst. Here we present his poem, "The Lost Pilot".

Roethke's poems are filled with sensuality and lyric power that he used to declare his love for nature and beauty. His 1948 volume, The Lost Son and Other Poems, is widely considered his best. At the University of Washington, Roethke taught many other poets who would become renowned, including Richard Hugo, Carolyn Kizer, David Wagoner, and James Wright. His poem, "Elegy for Jane", is presented here.
